THE LEGO MOVIE

The LEGO Movie may just be the most fun I have ever had at the cinema. It is deliriously entertaining and captures the wonders of the imagination right through from start to finish.

Who would have thought that to be possible for a film based on a line of construction toys?

This is a line of toys that has been keeping people entertained since 1949 so I guess it is not too hard to imagine a film doing the same. Just as long as it didn't end up like Battleship.

The LEGO Movie is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the men who brought us Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, an indicator of the wackiness to expect when you take your seat at the cinema.

Lord and Miller are on top form again in the writing department as well. The jokes come thick and fast and yes there are plenty of them in there for the adults. 

Emmet (Chris Pratt) and Batman (Will Arnett)

The LEGO Movie tells the story of Emmet (Chris Pratt), a construction worker who is believed to be the "Special" after coming into contact with the Piece of Resistance. Led by Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Emmet must learn to become a "Master Builder" and put a stop to Lord Business' (Will Ferrell) plan to destroy the universe with the Kragle. 

Still with me? Good, don't worry though, it does make sense when you actually see the film.

What makes The LEGO Movie so great is the fantastic array of characters that it boasts. Emmet is the main focal point of the film and voiced perfectly by Chris Pratt, he is a joy to watch and will probably be at the top of your kids LEGO wish list.

Vitruvius, Wyldstyle and Lord Business are all voiced brilliantly by Freeman, Banks and Ferrell, Freeman in particular sounding like he had a lot of fun in the recording studio.

But there are two characters who steal the show. Bad Cop/Good Cop voiced by Liam Neeson and Batman voiced by Will Arnett have some of the truly laugh-out-loud moments. Liam Neeson could appear in any film from now on and I just won't be able to get the Good Cop voice out of my head. 

Keep an ear out for other appearances such as Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as an arguing duo of Superman and Green Lantern, and Alison Brie as Uni-Kitty.

There are a few nostalgic nods to old LEGO sets that will make adults want to get creative again and a brilliant cameo from a few of cinema's best-loved characters, but I don't want to spoil that for any of you.

The animation is wonderful, with stop-motion being mixed together with CGI animation. It really adds to the charm of the film, making it look as if someone is building a LEGO set right in front of your very eyes.

Some would argue that end of the film is too cheesy but I think it was perfect. LEGO, like any toy, is designed to let your imagination run free and the final act is a true testament to the imagination that LEGO has provided over the years. 

So go and see The LEGO Movie. You simply won't regret it. If you do go and see it, I dare you to try and leave the cinema without humming 'Everything Is AWESOME'. To say it is catchy song is an understatement.
