10 MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF 2017
2017 is soon upon us and with it comes a number of cinematic releases that I'm very excited about. Having seen the likes of La La Land, A Monster Calls, Hacksaw Ridge and Lion already, they will obviously not be making this list, even if I'm eagerly anticipating seeing two of them again. As always, I'm going by UK release dates so, without further ado, here are my 10 most anticipated films of 2017.
Silence
Silence has been Martin Scorsese's "passion project" ever since 1990. Do I need another reason to be excited for this one?
Kong: Skull Island
If the trailer and posters are anything to go by, Kong: Skull Island is going to be HUGE! With a stellar cast and Kong looking as if he's pretty pissed off, I am excited to see this iconic creature make a return to the big screen. With a future film scheduled to see Kong face-off with Godzilla, I can't wait to see how they're going to tie the films together.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Everybody's favourite dysfunctional superhero family is returning to the big screen next year. All of the cast are coming back, as well as James Gunn on creative duties, meaning we can all get hooked on that feeling yet again. The most interesting thing about this film for me is whether they will just try and repeat the same trick twice or whether they'll try and do something a bit different.
Alien: Covenant
Seriously, just look at the above poster and tell me that doesn't strike some fear into you. Ridley Scott returns to direct this sequel to Prometheus, and it looks as if he's going to be taking us back for a film more like Alien than anything that came after his 1979 classic. Well, add in a little Aliens and that's what Alien: Covenant is shaping up to be. I can't wait.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Tom Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man made such a splash in Captain America: Civil War, even if he was only in it for about 15-20 minutes, that it's hard for me to not feel excited about Marvel Studios giving us our first solo Spider-Man outing within the MCU. He is arguably my favourite superhero after all. Sony had their chance with the character, twice, and they messed it up, twice, so there is a fair amount of pressure on Marvel Studios to do justice to one of their most beloved characters.
War for the Planet of the Apes
The Planet of the Apes reboot series is one of the most undervalued in film today, with its compelling central story of Caesar, incredible special effects and brilliant motion capture performances making it unmissable. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did brilliantly well to show the beginnings of war but this is going to be all out war, and who wouldn't be excited for cinematic depiction of war between humans and apes?
Dunkirk
A new Christopher Nolan film is always a treat. A new Christopher Nolan war film, his first of the genre, is likely to be a cinematic event not to be missed.
Blade Runner 2049
I really like the original Blade Runner but I'm not going to lie, the main reasons I have put Blade Runner 2049 on this list is because of; a) Denis Villeneuve is one of the most fascinating directors working today, and b) if the trailer is anything to go by, Roger Deakins' cinematography is going to be stunning.
Justice League
Look, the DCEU has got off to a very shaky start, 2016 not being a very good year for it at all. With DC releasing two films in 2017, Wonder Woman being first, a lot of the DCEU's future is at stake with Justice League, the DC equivalent of The Avengers. Call me crazy for being excited to see these superheroes team up on the big screen, particularly after the mess we saw Snyder make of Batman v Superman this year, but I am willing to give him one more chance. Get it right and this could be something very special.
Star Wars: Episode VIII
We know very little about Star Wars: Episode VIII at this moment in time, not even its official title. What I do know though is that with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story bringing Star Wars back so well, I can't wait to see the next chapter in the saga. What has Luke been up to? Who is Rey exactly? These are both questions I am seriously looking forward to being answered.
